PHILLY SOUL SELECT (SoulMusic Records/Warner X)

Philly Soul Select

Conceived by award-winning producer/songwriter Preston Glass (who started his professional career with the legendary Thom Bell as his mentor) and David Nathan (who championed the many influential producers, songwriters, artists and musicians to come out of Philadelphia through his work as a British music journalist in the ‘70s and beyond), PHILLY SOUL SELECT includes new recordings of Philly classics such as “Now That We Found Love,” “I’ll Always Love My Mama,” “Show You The Way To Go” and “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me” along with previously unreleased tracks by The Stylistics and The Delfonics, two of the Philly sound’s foundational vocal groups.

This 3-CD SoulMusic Records’ set celebrates the recordings that Solomon Burke made for the legendary Atlantic Records label between 1960 and 1968. Solomon is generally acknowledged as one of the greatest soul singers to emerge during the genre’s golden days. He signed to Atlantic before ‘soul music’ became a bona fide sub-genre of African-American music and he was, in fact, one of the first artists to use ‘soul’ to describe his music. He would eventually be known the world over as ‘The King of Rock and Soul’.
