THIS MONTH’S REISSUES & RELEASES

SOULMUSIC.COM 5-STAR PICK

THE DYNAMIC SUPERIORS:  The Dynamic Superiors/Pure Pleasure (CD)

First reissued in 2010 by SoulMusic Records via Cherry Red Records, this superb set has now been re-pressed due to demand! Digitally remastered on one disc: The Dynamic Superiors and Pure Pleasure, both released in 1975. The albums were produced by the hitmaking husband-and-wife team of (the late) Nick Ashford & Valerie Simpson. The Dynamic Superiors’ lead singer Tony Washington was openly gay – and seemingly, the first openly gay black recording artist, predating Sylvester and Carl Bean by a number of years. The group’s self-titled Motown debut included the now-classic ‘Shoe Shoe Shine,’ a Top 20 US R&B hit and the follow-up, ‘Leave It Alone’ which reached #13 on the US R&B charts as well as the Ashford & Simpson chestnut, ‘Don’t Send Nobody Else’. Pure Pleasure included the dance hit, ‘Face the Music,’ a Top 10 disco hit in 1975.

The Dynamic Superiors: 1 Shoe Shoe Shine; 2 Soon; 3 Leave It Alone; 4 Don’t Send Nobody Else; 5 Romeo; 6 Star Of My Life; 7 Cry When You Want To; 8 I Got Away; 9 One-Nighter; 10 Release Me; Pure Pleasure:  11 Deception; 12 Pleasure; 13 Nobody’s Gonna Change Me; 14 Feeling Mellow; 15 Face The Music; 16 Hit And Run Lovers; 17 A Better Way; 18 Don’t Give Up On Me Baby

DUSTY SPRINGFIELD: Dusty Sings Soul (CD)

2022 collection. From the very start of her solo career, it was Dusty Springfield’s intention to make records in the style of the black American artists that she admired, both professionally and personally. She recorded her version of a soul song at her first solo session and was still recording soul songs on all of her albums, singles and EPs throughout the ’60s and into the ’70s. Dusty Sings Soul is a long overdue and carefully curated collection of recordings from her 60s singles and albums.

MARVIN GAYE: What’s Going On 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition (Vinyl)

Marvin Gaye’s 1971 Motown masterwork returns to vinyl in this 2-LP set marking its 50th anniversary (and delayed from 2021). It features direct-to-analog mastering from the original tapes by Kevin Gray, and includes four tracks making their vinyl debut (including the “stripped” version of the title song) plus six mono single mixes and B-sides.
