Countless people have wanted to play guitar like Nile Rodgers. This year, fans with deep pockets will get a chance to own some of his instruments.

The CHIC mastermind and pop/rock/R&B icon will partner with Christie's in New York on Dec. 16 to auction some 160 guitars, plus sports cars and vintage outfits. All the proceeds from the sale will benefit Rodgers' We Are Family Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering young people.

Rodgers told Rolling Stone he was inspired to hang on to many of his guitars throughout his successful career ever since he was a teenager, when he saw Dr. John selling a guitar at a pawn shop as a teenager. Slimming down his collection - including instruments that played on hits by CHIC, Diana Ross, David Bowie and Daft Punk - proved to be a challenge, he added. “I would pick one up, remember the song that I played on it, and then get really emotional," he told the magazine.

Among the items that will sell include a prototype of Rodgers' signature Fender Stratocaster "Hitmaker" model and a Porsche Targa Turbo - one of only seven in the world.
