The latest release from SoulMusic Records (distributed by Warner X) is an exciting version of the Philly soul-flavoured “Ain’t Nothing (Like The Love)” by multi-talented guitarist, musician and producer Dontavius Turner which features the sampled original vocals by the late Phillip Ballou, member of the ’70s group Revelation and longtime background vocalist with Luther Vandross.
The song was written by Phillip, David Nathan and John Simmons (former member of The Reflections before becoming musical director for Stephanie Mills and then Whitney Houston) and the recorded version was originally planned as part of Phillip’s solo demo in 1978. John recorded it in 1981 for a small independent Detroit label and his version became a much-sought after favourite on the UK’s rare groove scene in the ’90s. Canadian DJ Pomo Beats sampled it for a SoundCloud-only clip in 2017and Georgia-based Dontavius Turner’s jazz version of the Pomo track caught the ear of SoulMusic.com founder David Nathan on YouTube and asked the talented guitarist to create a new recording of the song, using Phillip’s original vocals.
Phillip’s version was also released on vinyl in 2017 via SuperDiscoEdits and David Nathan’s version (done as a demo) was also released on a French compilation “Message In Our Music.”
