A new box set releasing in 2020 chronicles the Queen of Soul’s entire career.

The unbelievable six-decade career of Aretha Franklin will be anthologized on a new box set this fall, featuring 19 unreleased recordings.

The new 81-track collection Aretha features four CDs spanning from her very first single in 1956, cut in Detroit’s New Bethel Baptist Church (where her father served as pastor of the congregation) all the way to a triumphant performance of “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2015 – a dazzling appearance that moved honoree Carole King, the song’s co-writer, to tears.

Along the way, you’ll hear iconic songs from her time as an artist on Columbia, Atlantic and Arista Records. Her immortal version of “Respect” is there, but you’ll also find exciting different versions of favorites like “Chain of Fools” (presented in an alternate take), “Rock Steady” (in a different mix), “Don’t Play That Song” (in concert) and “Think” (as performed in the blockbuster film The Blues Brothers).

Unreleased treasures abound on this package, including never-before-heard demos of “Try a Little Tenderness” and “My Kind of Town” – made famous by Frank Sinatra and sung by The Queen of Soul in tribute to Detroit, not Chicago – alternate versions of “Young, Gifted and Black” and “Until You Come Back to Me,” duets with Smokey Robinson and Dionne Warwick, and even a cover of Debby Boone’s “You Light Up My Life.”

Aretha includes liner notes by Rochelle Riley, Detroit’s director of arts and culture, and SoulMusic.com’s founder David Nathan, who’s interviewed the Queen more times than any living writer. Artist Makeba KEEBS Rainey has styled a beautiful Neal Preston photograph of Aretha for the front cover. A collection of highlights from the box will also be released as a 1CD or 2LP set.
