FIRST REPRINT OF 1985 INTERVIEW WITH TINA TURNER and DAVID NATHAN!

In soulful remembrance of the musical icon Tina Turner (November 26, 1939 – May 24, 2023)

By David Nathan, The British Ambassador Of Soul

As a working music journalist for over three decades, I would often share with inquiring minds if there were any major soul music artists I didn’t get the opportunity to interview.  I’ve said that there were three legends that fell into that category – Marvin Gaye, Prince and Tina Turner, who did I recall seeing when she performed at The Beverly Theater in Los Angeles in September 1984 during the early months on her ‘Private Dancer’ US tour.  It was Tina’s longtime musical director, (the late) Kenny Moore who had I met years earlier through my music biz ‘Godmother’ and dear friend Doris Troy that I recall getting last minute tickets for the sold-out show; afterwards, I got a quick handshake and ‘hello’ from Tina before she was ushered off by manager Roger Davies.

Since my work in the US was for Britain’s pioneering publication, “Blues & Soul,” I didn’t document the articles I wrote for the short period of time when I was the L.A.-based contributor wrote for another UK magazine, “The Street Scene” (from October 1985 to April 1986).  I assumed for many years – literally until I began putting together this soulful remembrance today (May 27th 2023) – that in fact I DID interview Tina Turner in an exclusive story for a December  1985 issue of the short-lived publication!

Here, in full, is a reprint of the interview with Tina, appearing for the first time since its original publication.  Fitting indeed that so much of what Tina said in our conversation (which included a comment from Kenny Moore) was prophetic in terms of what she would achieve as she began her amazing personal, musical and career reinvention.  Truly beyond her “Wildest Dreams”…

In the words of one of my absolute favourite-ever Tina Turner recordings… Something Beautiful Remains.

Rest Peacefully, Tina
