Deeply saddened by the news of the passing of the great singer/songwriter Bill Withers today. I had the privilege to interview Bill a number of times in the early ’70s and vividly recall meeting him at his Benedict Canyon home in 1975 on one of my first visits to Los Angeles. The last time I saw him in person was at The Rhythm & Blues Foundation Pioneer Awards in 2008 He was down-to-earth, real, friendly and truly one of the most endearing gentle giants of the music industry. His authenticity, his candour and his wit were particular facets of his personality that I recall vividly. Bill made a massive contribution to music and his legacy of recordings was rich with slice-of-life honesty. RIP, Bill, forever a soulful musical poet…
