It’s been a while since the famed group Honey Cone – best known for a string of classic hits as one of the flagship artists on Hot Wax Records, the label founded by Holland, Dozier & Holland in 1968.
Recordings like 1970’s “Want Ads,” (a pop & R&b chartopper in 1971) “Stick Up” and “One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show” propelled the original trio – Carolyn Willis (formerly of Bobby B. Soxx & The Blue Jeans), Edna Wright (of the gospel group The Cogics) and former Ikette, Shelly Clark – to prominence.
Inducted into The SoulMusic Hall Of Fame at SoulMusic.com by public vote in 2020, Honey Cone are back with their first release in 50 years and a new line-up formed in 2014 by Shelly with Kathy Merrick and Wendy Smith-Bruné. An exciting version of the Eurythmics’ “Here Comes The Rain Again” produced by PWP Works of Art, which consists of seven-time Grammy Award-winner Neal H. Pogue, co-founder and bassist of Earth, Wind & Fire Verdine White and long-time, exclusive drummer for Earth, Wind & Fire, John Paris.
David Nathan caught up with Shelly to do some ‘soul talkin’ about the new single and her work with (husband of 45 years) Verdine on his December 2024 single “Superman” in tribute to his brother, Maurice White.
(Special thanks to Dustin Fitzharris for arranging our interview with Shelly)
