From “Shout” to “That Lady” and beyond, an audio celebration of an essential soul group.

At the crossroads of soul and rock and roll, The Isley Brothers remain one of the essential R&B groups in popular music history. The latest episode of the My Classic Soul podcast celebrates their incredible discography.

From the moment they first appeared on the charts with 1959’s “Shout,” O’Kelly, Ronald and Rudolph Isley were a formidable force in soul music. After stints on RCA Victor, Atlantic, Motown and others, the trio took their career in their own hands, creating the T-Neck label and reaching No. 2 on the pop charts with “It’s Your Thing” in 1969. In the ’70s, the group expanded to a 3+3 line-up, adding younger brothers Ernie and Marvin Isley plus Rudolph’s brother-in-law Chris Jasper. This line-up stretched the boundaries of funk and soul for nearly 15 years, influencing generations of R&B icons as well as hip-hop acts into the 21st century.

In this episode, SoulMusic.com’s own David Nathan and Janine Coveney come together to discuss The Isleys’ immeasurable impact on music, from romantic ballads to conscious anthems and beyond.
