It’s that time of year again–when music nerds cobble together end-of-the-year “best of” lists. Top albums, songs, movies, memes; you name it, and someone is out there painstakingly compiling a ranked list of the best of the year’s best.
The editors over at Rolling Stone magazine are among some of the nerdiest of music nerds, so we tend to give their year-end lists more respect and gravity than most. Today, the stalwart periodical has released their lists for 2020. Looking over their lineup for Best Reissues for the past 12 months, and it’s packed front to back with some seriously great stuff.

Leading the charge Roberta Flack’s stunning 1969 debut, First Take, which the mag heaps with praise, calling the bonus disc featuring a 1968 demo session as “breathtaking.” The beautiful deluxe edition of Prince’s 1987 masterpiece, Sign O’ the Times, was also lauded high on the list: “The big-box version of this reissue reveals the depth of Prince’s urgency in three CDs of unreleased studio treasures: diamonds and pearls by anyone else’s measure, all left behind on the way to his last perfect album.”
